Day Walks Program

Walks are subject to change depending on weather and reservations.

There are many people who visit Frigiliana and Nerja each year who already own or rent their own accommodation. For these people I offer a Day Walks Programme. You may join any of my pre-arranged hikes and walks listed below.

You simply arrive at the appointed place and Pay on the Day but check the Calendar to make sure there are places available. An email or phone call in advance is always a good idea but generally there are no problems joining whatever hikes or walks I have arranged for that day.

Meeting in front of El Ingenio Suger-Cane factory in the center of Frigiliana from 10.00am and we depart at 10.30am

River Walks: These are a short 3 hour walk into the local river valley close to Frigiliana. Its a very nice gentle walk with not much uphill. We walk through the river in our sandals or trainers. Plenty of liquids, sunscream, hats are needed. Duration: 3 hours. Distance 5 or 6 klm. ascent: 100 meters.

Guided Walk of Frigiliana, hill and countryside: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, I run a Guided Walk of Frigiliana town, Hill and Countryside. It is a approximately 3 hours long and is a historical guide of the town of Frigiliana and its surrounding countryside. We start from the centre of Frigiliana in front of the Sugar-cane Factory.

• We walk along the main street of Calle Real, visiting courtyards, patios, laneways and back alleys that most people never enter.

• A secret Botanical gardens hidden from the view of most visitors.

• We visit the ruins of the 10th century Arabic Castillo Lizar or “El Fuerte” “The Stronghold” and discuss the history of the Phoenicians, Romans, Iberians, Arabs and Spanish.

• We’ll talk about the interaction of the Muslims, Christian and Jewish populations.

• The effects of the Inquisition, the Civil War and the most recent phenomenon of Tourism.

• We will have a coffee-shop stop, visit an art gallery and Seraphim, the last remaining esparto grass artisan in Frigiliana.

• You will need good shoes or sandals but not flip-flops. There is some rough terrain.

1. El Fuerte. There is a waymarked route winding its way up onto the shoulders of this mighty mountain. After 40 minutes of steep climbing the route eventually begins to level off but always leading up, up ,up. We continue along the ridge of the mountain where we stop many times for drinks, a bite to eat, photographs. At 1000 meters high, gives us incredible views of the coast and the Sierra Almijara Natural Park. Total Distance is 8 kilometers. Ascent 700 meters. Time 5 hours.

2. El Higueron. The is a warm weather, river valley walk. We criss-cross the river bed as we walk deep into the Sierra Almijara mountains. There is a large reservoir in the valley that is perfect for a swim but only during the summer months as its filled by cold mountains streams. Distance is roughly 15klm. Total ascent is 200 meters. Time is roughly 5 hours.

3. El Acebuchal, The Hidden Village. Its a walk that takes us through the campo roads and lane ways of the Frigiliana and Torrox Hills to Acebuchal. We will stop after a couple of hours wandering at Antonio's bar in Acebuchal for a drink and a bite to eat, enjoying the views from their bar and restaurant, before returning to Frigiliana along paths that are a little less travelled.Total Distance is about 14 kilometers. Time roughly 5 hours. Ascent is 250 meters.

4. Rio Chillar. This is a really good warm weather walk. It originates in Frigiliana taking Del Imán trail to the Rio Chillar where we turn right and head downriver towards Nerja. The Rio Chillar is a pure river walk so you will get your boots wet. It has a few areas where you will be required to scramble over large boulders but its a really great experience if you're up for it. Duration is 6 hours. Distance is 18 kilometers. Ascent is 400 meters.

5. Cuesto del Sordo. A wonderful walk from the village of Frigiliana down into El Higueron, past the Pozo Batan and climbing out of the river valley up to Cuesta del Sordo. Stopping for a drink and a bite to eat, we take in the glorious views down to the sea and of the Sierra Enmedio. We walk on to la Molineta and a well earned beer. Time is 5 hours. Distance is 14 kilometers. Ascent is 450 mtrs.

6. A Walk to Nerja. A lovely little walk to Nerja. We take a roundabout way to get there following the Cueato del Sordo and Rio Higueron. We take the bus back to Frigiliana.

Distance 15 klm. Ascent 400 mtrs. Duration 5 hours.

7. Cortijo del Imán. This is a really good mountain trek with a little bit of river valley walking. Its quite tough but the views are spectacular of the Sierra Enmedio, Higueron and Chillar valleys. Duration is 7 hours. Distance is 18 kilometers. Ascent is 900 meters.

8. El Cielo. This is one of the big one's in the national Park area. It contains outstanding views of the area but is a fairly tough climb. Its fairly steep near the end. Good boots, plenty of water and good general fitness levels required for this one but its worth it. Distance 24 kilometers. Ascent 1500 meters. Duration 8 hours.

9. Cerro Del Pinto. This is one of the most used routes from Frigiliana. there is a lovely little shrine at the top and is regularly frequented by locals. this is a good walk with a couple of ascents that will make you work. Excellent views from the top though. Well worth the effort. Distance 14 kilometers. Ascent 500 meters. Duration 5 hours.

10. For those who like long distance hiking and walking I have a special series of routes that I have learned from a local guide. Some of these routes are up to 30 kilometers long and attain heights of over 2000 meters. Some can last for up to 10 hours. If you would like to do one or two of these hikes then please let me know in advance so we can offer you a few different choices.
