Andalucía's Eastern Coast (known as Costa Tropical) has glorious hills and mountains, pretty beaches and coves, the azure waters of the southern Mediterranean, and a wonderful sub-tropical climate – what else do you need for a walking holiday in the sunshine? Your base is the coastal city of Almuñécar, where the sierras plunge spectacularly into the sea and you will find no less than 25 beaches and coves within the boundary of the municipality. It is a city whose Phoenician, Roman, and Moorish past is still much in evidence. Granada is only 45 miles away and you have an included visit to the last city to be surrendered by the Moors in 1492.

HOLIDAY ITINERARY

DAY ONE Arrival Day

On arrival at Malaga airport, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the Hotel Bahia Tropical (55 miles) located in Almuñécar for seven nights half board accommodation.

DAY TWO Walk 1

Short transfer (4 miles) to the starting point of your first walk, just outside Almuñécar. Your guide will take you via gorges, cliffs, and coastal paths along beaches and coves, passing ancient watchtowers, with excellent views as you go.

Your destination is the old town of Salobreña, where there is time to have lunch and explore. The walk is 5 miles, 150m of ascent and descent, approximately 3 hours walking.

The terrain is a mix of rough trails and road walking with the steep ground in parts.

DAY THREE Included excursion to the wonderful city of Granada

You will have time to explore Granada before your guided visit of the Alhambra complex.

The Alhambra complex consists of several areas including the Generalife Garden and Summer Palace, Alcazaba, Charles V Palace, and the Nasrid Palaces.

Please note the Nasrid Palace part of the complex may not be included in your visit.

DAY FOUR Free day in resort.

DAY FIVE Free day or why not join our optional excursion to the scenic Alpujarras.

There is a 60 minute coach transfer to the Sierra Nevada where you start your walk from Capileira (4000ft). The route is a well-used walking trail that winds between Capileira, Bubion (3500ft) and ends in Pampaneira (3000 feet). The route is 5 miles with a climb of 150m and descent of 300m, walking for 4 hours.

DAY SIX Walk 2

10-mile coach transfer to your starting point at Playa Canuelo, a remote sandy cove, from where you walk along the old coastal route to La Herradura.

This walk includes a visit to the Watch Towers of La Caleta and Cerro Gordo en route, and a stop off at a beach-side cafe for coffee in Playa Cantarrijan, one of the most beautiful

beaches on the coast. The walk continues through the Maro Cliffs Nature Reserve where you may see ibex (wild mountain goats which can grow to 14 stone in weight!).

You stop for lunch at La Herradura before catching the local bus back to Almuñécar. From there you walk for a further hour along the promenade to your hotel.

The walk is 7 miles in total and the terrain is a mix of rough trails and road walking with steep ground in parts. Ascent/descent is 250m, approx. 4 hours walking.

The walk takes you to the top of Cerro Felix (540m) with the most stunning views of the Mediterranean, Nerja, and Frigiliana.

The route follows the old mule routes laid down over centuries in the Sierra Almijara Natural Park, a protected area of 44,000 hectares home to ibex, wild boar,

vultures, and eagles. This route is all cross country on rough trails with steep ground in parts, consisting of 8 miles, 400m of ascent and descent, 4 hours walking.
