Frigiliana is a village of some 3000 inhabitants situated in the Natural Park Sierra Almijara. It is approximately 6 km from the well known coastal resort of Nerja and 70 km east of Malaga City.
Frigiliana enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean micro climate of mild winters and hot summers when it seldom rains.

It is located 330 mtrs (1000 feet) above sea level which makes it an ideal gateway to the mountains of the Natural Park area.
Frigiliana and particularly its Moorish Quarter (Barrio Morisco) is one of the purest examples of popular Arab architecture to be found in Andalusia. Remains have been found here dating back to neolithic times with further evidence of Iberian and Roman settlements.
From medieval times Frigiliana's economy was based on the production of silk, olive oil, almonds and figs, and latterly tourism. It is perhaps the best known of the famous Andalusian "Pueblo Blanco" or "White Village".
The Arab way of life survived until the conquest of the Catholic Kings in 1485. From this time the Spanish Inquisition forced the Arab population to covert to Christianity and they became known as Moriscos or "New Christians".
They rebelled 80 years later in 1567 and the final battle "La Batalla de Frigiliana" resulted in their final defeat and expulsion from Spain.
Nowadays there are many artists living in and around the area of Frigiliana, painters, sculptors, ceramic artists as well as crafts artisans. The local municipal gallery and museum are always holding exhibitions.
